#51: THE THING

Take 1 part ALIEN, 2 parts INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, 1 part VIDEODROME, and mix them together, and that's the recipe for JOHN CARPENTER'S THE THING.  Which is one of the more kickass horror movie remakes of all time.

The original film THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD, is an amazing piece of work.  A bit campy perhaps, but there was a nice sense of dread throughout the film.  You rarely even saw the monster, maybe just an arm coming through the door.  You just knew that something was out there.

But when John Carpenter took a shot at it with Kurt Russel in this remake.  You got to see the monster.  Boy did you ever.  A head that grows spider-legs and crawls around is about as freaky as you can get.  It's as if William Burroughs did the character design for the film.

Long considered one of Carptenter's best, it makes you wonder why he hasn't spoiled it with a lame sequel, like he's already done for HALLOWEEN and ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK.
