#75: 112 OCEAN AVENUE
"GET OUT NOW!" Can you believe that there's actually been 9 SEQUELS to the original 1979 film? There's been tons of great Haunted House movies, but THE AMITYVILLE HORROR certainly sticks out as one of the most successful and chilling. From green ooze dripping out of the walls, the mysterious blood red room, to all of those flies, the film which starred Margot "Wacko" Kidder, and James Brolin, still holds up as pretty damn creepy. Based on a not quite true story told in Jay Anson's novel, the gimmick of it being "real" helped fool audiences much like THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT had. But where the truth and fiction end are interesting indeed.
There really was a Lutz family who lived in the house for back in 1975, but they moved out 27 days later with fantastic stories of hauntings. They tape recorded their tale to Jay Anson for his book, and the rest is...history.
One year before the Lutz's moved in, a horrible incident took place when Ronald DeFoe took a .35 Marlin rifle and in the dead of night killed mother, father, 2 sisters, and 2 brothers while they were sleeping. But with that aside and the Lutz's questionable experience (which is riddled with inconsistencies and largely looked upon as a hoax by the people of Amityville), every other person that's lived there has had a haunting free time. Though that didn't stop the sequels. AMITYVILLE II: THE POSSESSION (which has a ridiculously detailed website below) came out in 1983, and was a prequel of sorts featuring the DeFoe murders, but the ridiculous demonic possession additions and other fictitious scenes prompted a lawsuit from the family. Do yourself a favor and check out the wonderful AmityvilleHorror.com site listed below for tons more information about this infamous house. MULTIMEDIA
