SPEED RACER IS JUST KIND OF AN OK MOVIE

Speed Racer is a gorgeous movie that's unlike anything you've ever seen before. The colors are simply beautiful, and the racing scenes are about as fun as they get, but between all the dazzle are stretches of tedium that will make all but the most diehard 8 year old boy twitch in the seats uncomfortably. There's so much the Wachowski Brothers got right in this movie, but ultimately the 135 minute running length is a bit too much of a good thing. I'd actually love to see a heavily edited version of this film that chops about 25 minutes out of it, and it'd be a damn fine work of art. So underneath it all, there's really a pretty great movie underneath. I'm just geeky enough to love it because they got the pogo jumping sound effects just right. The cast is really great, too, especially Matthew Fox who is even more cool and kickass than you'd ever thought he could be. It's worth watching if you have some patience. And it might be a good justification to see something fantastic on an IMAX screen if you can. Otherwise, I'd save your dough. Only for the most diehard Speed Racer and/or Wachowski fans.
