THE WORST HALLOWEEN COSTUMES OF ALL TIME

PAUL NEWMAN WAS GREAT

Recently I had been trying to put together a retrospective article on Cool Hand Luke, and of course Newman was the first person I tried to contact. This was a couple months ago and I was unaware that he had gone home to get ready for his cancer to take its course. Paul Newman is one of the world's great men. He had it all, and gave a lot more. He's starred in some of the greatest movies ever made, found time to live it up as a race car driver, landed and kept one of the most beautiful women for his wife, and gave us some pretty kickass salad dressing. If men would only aspire to be 20% of the man Newman was, the world would be a better place. Thanks for everything, Paul!

RALPH WAITE INTERVIEWED

I saw Cool Hand Luke for the first time about a month ago. It's on a long list of classic movies that I'm ashamed to have not seen before. I was so impressed that I began contacting the cast and crew to put together a retrospective. What a thrill to get a call back from Ralph Waite, the veteran actor who actually has one of my favorite parts in the film as the new guy who struggles to figure out the rules in the prison work camp. Waite turns 80 this year (and shares my June 22nd birthday) and has had a long career that's lasted more than 40 years and still keeps him busy. In between his film work which has included such classics as Five Easy Pieces, Roots, HBO's Carnivale, and of course the patriarch of The Waltons clan, he ran for congress in 1990 and 1998. Here's our interview full of good juicy details of his career. CLICK HERE TO READ IT.

TED FINN at LUNA'S CAFE - THIS THURSDAY AUG, 28th!
If you want a truly unique and fun experience in Sacramento, go see Ted Finn read his poetry. I've known Ted off and on for about 15 years now and he's easily my favorite performance artist. Crazy pop culture subject matter and a giant scary monster persona make him an entertaining mix of Henry Rollins and Weird Al. Check him out!

MOVIES
DEATH RACE
I loved it. It's definitely a movie to see in a theater full of rowdy black people. There's some super sick vehicular violence. It's got a few nods to the original that I won't give away, but it's so completely different that it really isn't even a remake. CLICK HERE for our entire review.

BOOKS

HAUNTED: A NOVEL by CHUCK PALAHNIUK

This is a couple years old, but I just tore through this and think it's one of the most wonderfully sickening books I've read in a long time. I couldn't put it down. A bunch of writers are taken to a secret place where they're kept for 90 days to create their masterpieces. Turns out they have some pretty horrible stories to tell, and they decide to make their real life situation even more horrible.

LIFE: A USER'S MANUAL by STEVE CULLISON

I'm all for giving up and coming humorists a hand, and Steve's sometimes satirical and often dead on look on how to succeed in life is a lot funnier than you'd think it'd be. The artwork, though sparse, looks like something from an '80s era Macintosh videogame, but it's full of laughs. Advice ranging from running for President to creative dating tips abound.

MEGO 8" SUPER HEROES: WORLD'S GREATEST TOYS
by BENJAMIN HOLCOMB

This gorgeous tome is a spectacular love letter to the great super hero action figures made by Mego in the '70s. Any kid worth anything had at least one of these. Tons of great history and giant full color glossy pictures throughout make this a must have book for any fan of these fine toys.

Every piece of ever figure and multiple angle photography make this a truly indispensable addition to an retroCRUSHers library.

JIMMY OLSEN: THE ARTICLE!

As comic book sidekicks go, Jimmy Olsen might not be the first guy you think of, but he's a vastly underrated character that is instrumental both in the history of Superman, and the catalyst for Jack Kirby to create some of the most exciting characters in fiction. THE TOP 20 MOST ANNOYING SONGS

About a month ago we conducted a poll of the worst songs of all time. With a staggering 4,000 responses, these are the results, as ranked by vote count. Sure each one of these is somebody's favorite song, and without a doubt you have some worse choices that aren't here, either. There are certainly songs that are technically worse, but these are those special bad songs that became popular and played so many millions of times that you want to pound rusty nails into your skull to make the noise stop. As the universal official keepers of pop culture, it is retroCRUSH's duty and pleasure to bring them to you. Plus we have videos to watch for EACH ONE!
