The Superfriends and Sidekicks

One of my early great cartoon loves was The Superfriends. It’s dorky as hell, but when you saw this beginning, you knew you were in for something special. Great powerful music, and a bombastic introduction by the inimitable Ted Knight. Though I could have done without Wendy and Marvin. I never quite understood the appeal of sidekicks. Robin was shitty enough, but when you were playing heroes with your friends, nobody ever wanted to be those two, let alone The Wonder Twins or Gleek. The whole idea that kids would dig superheroes more if there was somebody younger to identify with was ludicrous. We didn’t want anybody like us in those cartoons. We looked to Superman and Batman because they were everything that we weren’t.
